EastWest Basic Savings Account: Best Way to Withdraw your Paypal earnings

Note: This is NOT a paid advertisement of any bank or company but an account of author's personal experience. Also, this is not a tutorial on how to use/enroll the card. This is a post of why I personally prefer it over the other leading bank(s).

I strongly recommend opening an EastWest Basic Savings account (or EW) if you rely on your Paypal earnings as a freelancer over the leading bank. Here's why.

First, let me say that I stumbled upon the bank because I had some concerns: one, I am looking for a potential second bank account as I don't like the idea of putting everything in one (in case my main bank, BPI, encounters any problem). Two, I'm in search of a cost-effective way because BPI charges P150 every Paypal withdrawal and when you do it regularly, the bank is earning at least how much you have to pay for your credit card annual fee. That big money in the long run.

In search for a "fee-less" Paypal withdrawal service, I decided to open an EastWest Basic Savings account and a UnionBank EON account (or UB). UB, because my sister uses it and I used to have one before. Although I'm not satisfied with EON (I opened an account back in 2009, iirc), I still opened one in case I don't like EW. The requirements are almost the same with an addition of a 1x1 or 2x2 ID photo for EW. Both will issue you a Visa debit card which you can use to purchase things online with the difference of EW giving you the card after a week while you can get UB's within the day. But hey, EW's card is infinitely shinier (literally!) and more handsome. EW's card has a microchip and your name embossed while UB's printed like the regular cash card. You have to pay P100 for EW as an initial deposit (don't worry, it stays in your account) while you'll need to pay P550 for UB. That is P350 as the card's annual fee and P200 if you will use the card to verify your Paypal account. I didn't really need to pay for P200 since my account is verified already. But like I said, I'm looking for a secondary bank account anyway so I paid for it anyway since it stays in my account (I assume but I could not access my account at this moment. More on that later.)

After you get your cards, you can enroll them on online banking. Months ago, EW has the NetAccess although they're changing it to a new system effective March 1, 2016.

I must say that it was my first time to try the new EastWest Online last night and I thought I'd encounter some problem, I would need to go to my branch for access. But I did it despite the error messages they gave me such as "The email address you entered has already been registered. Please call...". How? I don't remember anymore but I went through updating my security questions and updating my password and finally I was able to login back to my account.

Anway, back to the Paypal topic, I prefer to use EW over UB. First because, well since December until now, I cannot use my UB card online. And I'm not going to put any money on something I can't have access online. Back in December I thought it was temporary that they disabled new account enrollment online. Now, it gives some new kind of text error. So my UB EON card is useless, sad to say.

The good news about EastWest's is that: 1) I could see my withdrawal reflected on my account in less than a day!

I withdrew my money from Paypal some minutes after midnight (2/17/2016 00:52:46 GMT+08:00) and remembered to check my account around 6PM the same day, and voila! My account is updated :)

It's very efficient, I must say and great if you need to get your money later in the day instead of waiting for 3 days. And did you notice that my account earns an interest every month? That's sweet, no matter how small it may seem. I might even decide later to transfer some of my savings in this account if I eventually get a credit card from EastWest especially now that the BPI bank in our mall is relocated (that's inconvenient, BPI).

Any feedback about EastWest's credit card tho? Share me your thoughts.

  1. how much EW charges you on the transferring of funds?

  2. Zero. Whatever you withdraw from Paypal (the converted amount to peso) will be the same amount that you will see on your bank statement when you check. The only thing you have to deal with is Paypal's rip-off conversion

Tho I must say lately, EW takes more than a day to reflect the amount to your account ~2-3days

    1. How about bank to bank transfers? EON doesn't charge incoming transfers from other banks although it charges you 10p to other banks whereas with EW it's 25p.

Only difference I can tell but if you deal a lot, that adds up.

Also, can you tell the difference between their Basic Savings and Regular Savings? Thanks.

I haven't use bank/fund transfers on EW, I actually have no use for my EW except for my credit card and other bills payment. I think if you're using your EON for other purposes that's more convenient, it's the better choice for you then. The only reason I failed to ever use my EON card is because I can't enroll online in their facility at that time and their bank hours is only until 3PM (medyo hassle sa mga katulad kong nagpupuyat).

One look at their website to see the difference between regular and basic savings is the regular savings account is covered by PDIC and has a higher maintaining balance. If you don't wish to store your money on your account and use/transfer it to your other main account immediately, I'd suggest to get the basic savings account

    1. The card has expires after 7 years as it is a debit card. I haven't tried renewing yet but Eastwest's site said the debit card replacement is P150.

    1. Hi! yes, I still use it to withdraw Paypal payments. Fortunately, till no fees from EW! I never use my BPI to withdraw from Paypal again because of their fees. I also read that Gcash has no fees for Paypal withdrawal anymore so I think these are good alternatives than dealing with the leading banks.

  6. Hi lulu!

I just want to ask why is it that there is a $5 transaction fee for my transfer when I was informed that there will be no transaction fee for my east west debit card when transferring from Paypal.
    Kindly help please.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi, this is lulu. I haven't tried to withdraw money lately but I would in a couple of days. I would leave an update if there's any change.

As of last month, I haven't incurred any fees. My guess is you input the debit card number instead of your bank account? (it will show as checking account in the East West website once you successfully added it)

    2. Hi again, just a quick update. I was able to withdraw funds yesterday (7/26/2017) to my East West savings account (12 digits) and there was no fee deducted. I processed my Paypal withdrawal at around 7/26 2:50AM and checked my EW account 7/26 5:45PM and the full amount is reflected. Don't withdraw to your debit card account (16 digits) but to your savings account (Paypal would say it's a checking account). Hope that helps.

    3. Hi! I have mistakenly withdrawn money from paypal to EW using a debit card number on Aug 31. The Paypal dashboard says it's completed already, but no payment received up to now :(

Since today is a holiday, give it until Monday or Tuesday to see if the money will be reflected on your account.

  7. Hi,

Have you tried linking your EW card to Payoneer? Some says that Payoneer has a high conversion rate compared to Paypal.

    1. Hi, sorry I haven't tried using Payoneer yet but I looked into their site and that seems correct esp. if receiving large payments.

    2. Hi there,

May I know how much is the fee for withdrawing funds from Payoneer to EW? The amount will be roughly 10,000 pesos. Thank you.

  8. Hi,

I am also a Paypal to EW bank user. I can attest that there's no fees incurred when you transfer from paypal to EW. Fees will only apply in paypal when you withdraw less than 7k (the fee will be 50).

I heard that transferring money from paypal to card (using the card number instead of account number) yields higher Exhange rate but there is a $5.00 transfer fees from paypal. Anyone tried this using EW?

  9. Hi Lulu, still using EW? Does it take longer than a day to reflect on your account? Gcash is still down and thinking of using EW now. Thanks!

    1. Yes, still using EW. I reverted back to using them since nagkaproblem sa Gcash and still works. Tho be advised that you won't be able to use or get your EW card the same day you enroll to their service.

But great news, I just tried and it seems Gcash is working with Paypal again :)
